Why We Got Started

The Sleep On Green journey started on Memorial Day weekend 2007, when our son Christian was involved in a horrific motorcycle accident which caused him to be bedridden for several months.

At the time, Christian had recently purchased a memory foam mattress, but it wasn’t until he was confined to it, that we all realized it was doing much more harm than good. We quickly understood that he needed a mattress that not only provided the proper support necessary for his back, but also a mattress that was breathable and made with natural materials to prevent boils and bed sores.

Before our son's accident we had no idea what healthy sleep or clean sleep meant. Like many of us, we thought a mattress was a mattress, and as long as it seemed ‘comfy’, that’s all that mattered. It wasn’t until then that we had a wakeup call as we started to do some research and learned how memory foam mattresses as well as conventional mattresses can potentially make you sick.

This life changing moment spurred us into action, it was with great urgency that we searched for a “natural” mattress, one that would support Christian during his long road to recovery.

Source and Production

Cotone Ritorto, often referred to as “twisted cotton,” undergoes a unique spinning process that strengthens each fiber. The way this is done is by taking the Cotton fibers, which come from the seed coat—the outer layer of the cotton plant’s seeds, which is then separated from the plant and then the fibers from the seeds.

Next, the mixed and fluffed-up cotton passes through a carding machine, which further cleans the fibers and aligns them side by side. The combing action of the carding machine completes the cleaning and straightening process. The cotton threads are then twisted together. This meticulous technique results in a smoother, more resilient yarn that not only feels luxurious to the touch but also maintains its quality through years of regular use.

Why We Love Cotton: The Perfect Natural Fiber

Breathable

Cotton’s natural fibers enhance airflow allowing air to circulate freely, preventing the heat buildup often associated with synthetic materials.

Moisture Control

Cotton excels at absorbing and releasing moisture, helping to keep your sleep environment cool and dry throughout the night.

Durable

The unique spinning process of Cotone Ritorto enhances tensile strength, ensuring the fabric retains its integrity over time.

Resilient

Unlike lower-quality cottons that may wear out or pill quickly, Cotone Ritorto preserves its smooth texture and structural stability.

Biodegradable:
At the end of its life cycle,  cotton decomposes easily, averaging a few months depending on the environment.

Cotton Doesn’t Produce Microfibers:
You may have heard of “microfibers,” tiny strands that shed from fabrics during regular wear and end up in our waterways. Unlike synthetic materials, cotton is a natural, cellulose-based fiber that biodegrades in wastewater, saltwater, and freshwater, meaning it doesn’t contribute to widespread pollution.

Hypoallergenic:
Cotton is naturally hypoallergenic, making it far less likely to trigger allergic reactions or skin irritation. As a result, it’s often recommended for those with sensitive skin or allergies, including baby clothing, bedding, and any product that’s in close contact with the skin.

Gentle on Skin:
The natural softness of cotton makes it suitable for those who experience irritation with synthetic fabrics.

Non-allergenic:
Because Cotone Ritorto is grown and processed with eco-friendly methods, it’s less likely to contain irritants that can trigger allergies.

Ideal for Our Mattresses

Cotone Ritorto seamlessly complements other natural materials—such as wool, latex, and coconut coir—delivering a holistic sleep experience that balances comfort, support, and sustainability. By pairing cotton’s breathability with these supportive layers, our mattresses achieve the ideal blend of softness, resilience, and temperature regulation. Choosing the right cotton is vital to crafting an exceptional mattress, and Cotone Ritorto stands out as a premium option. Its sustainability, breathability, and durability ensure a restful night’s sleep while aligning with eco-conscious values. At Sleep On Green, we proudly incorporate this high-rated cotton into our products, providing both comfort and peace of mind—so you can rest easier knowing you’ve made a choice that benefits you and the planet.
